“It’s like connecting the dots. Instead of classes based on isolated subjects, The Professional MBA offers interactive sessions that build on each other, incorporating all facets of management. I was particularly pleased with the camaraderie that built within our class. I think we’ll always have a connection, regardless of where we live, and we’ll continue to be a great resource for each other. All in all, it is as if I now have this great library of knowledge to turn to, which I feel is of real value. This has incredible value to my company and my clients.”

- Melissa Flynn, account director
Rawle-Murdy Associates, Inc.

“My projects at work this year modeled the customer value project we completed in my Professional MBA coursework. My new assignment began with four months of very intense Six Sigma training, and I was grateful to begin that training with a good understanding of business statistics and statistics software, thanks to The Professional MBA classes at UT. They say that timing is everything, but I never would have been in the right place had I not earned my MBA from UT.”

- Sharon Kerr, business analyst in consumer care
Whirlpool Corporation

“The course broadened Rebecca’s thinking, making her even more valuable to DeRoyal. She currently oversees the human resources function for approximately 700 employees, coordinated by a human resources team of nine individuals.

“To be honest, I expect even more from Rebecca now, with regard to her creative thinking and the ability to look at a broader range of issues. Human resources is now a stronger contributor to the organization, with Rebecca’s clear understanding of the financial impact of every decision. That’s particularly helpful in our various product development initiatives. As a result of The Professional MBA, Rebecca’s thinking has grown leaps and bounds.”

- Bruce Mather, general counsel and secretary
and vice president of international business development

“I’ve taken on a new management position as manager of engineering services. Throughout the fall and winter, I have been able to demonstrate new skills. The vice president decided that we needed a dedicated manager to really expand the business, and luckily, he saw a way to put my new management knowledge and ESC’s investment to work.”

- Adam Engle, manager of engineering services

“The MBA program was a real stretch for me. Now I’m much more confident in myself. I look at the big picture and I see things more globally. I understand what we need to do to serve our customer better. Professional MBA opened my eyes to the world around me.
“The knowledge I have gained through my participation in The Professional MBA program has positioned me to grow professionally and personally. It has also taught me many ways to improve the efficiency of my business. Because I have shared the knowledge I have gained, my business associates and staff have benefited from the program as well.”

- Peggy Brown, manager of the creative media group
Oak Ridge National Laboratories

“Professional MBA taught me that all companies are value delivery systems. The purpose of business is to deliver value to the customer in return for value. The question is how the many functions add or subtract value. Now I look at a broader perspective, not just my little part of the equation. Now I focus on how I add value.”

- David Henderson, market development manager
Eastman Chemical Company

“One of the most powerful tools the program gave me was the ability to apply general concepts specifically to the challenges we face every day … real rubber-meets-the-road stuff. This program has had a huge effect on the way I approach business every day. The projects had a long-term value in that they allowed me to step back and systematically analyze each situation.
“The faculty were like counselors to us. We had a great deal of interaction outside of class, with frank and focused discussions about our personal leadership development programs.”

- Jeff Simpson, divisional VP of special events
Proffitt’s

“Gary (Grescek, Class of 2000) sharpened his critical thinking skills. His presentations are more crisp and effective, and his business acumen has expanded greatly. The two most obvious benefits of The Professional MBA, though, are his greater sense of confidence and his time management skills.”

- John Kidder, supervisor
Perkin Elmer

“Participating in the first Professional MBA class, which was populated by the brightest and most capable people I have been associated with, was in itself a challenging and invaluable growth experience. Being selected ‘Class Leader’ by those same individuals achieved a level of personal accomplishment I had not anticipated.”

- Scott Caldwell, regional vice president of sales
DeRoyal

“As a result of this program, my thinking is much more critical. I am more thorough in analyzing a situation. My effectiveness in managing people has improved. More importantly, my confidence as a leader has grown and is being recognized by others within the organization. I received what I needed from the program.”

“The value of the project to the student and the employer goes far beyond the scope of the project itself. It is one of the unique advantages of The Professional MBA over other MBA programs.”

- David Cobb, financial analyst

“It would be difficult to overstate the impact that The Professional MBA program has had on my career. At first, I benefited from the richer skill sets that the program helped me to develop. With these tools in-hand, my confidence and proficiency increased, giving me the opportunity to assume a larger role in the direction of my company. Later, the degree, when combined with my experiences, gave me the credentials and mobility to significantly advance my career.

“Only when viewed with some perspective have I come to realize the power of the experience. Professionals, no matter their position, experience or age, should consider the challenge. As is the case with many of my classmates, the results speak for themselves.

“ I don't know if you track this type of data but, in all candor, I am making twice what I made upon graduation...for a variety of reasons of course, but 80% of which are traceable back to my experience in the program.”

- Jeff Simpson, divisional VP of special events
Proffitt’s

Soon after graduation, I not only changed firms, but also industries, and am now the assistant vice president of management services for Marsh in Knoxville, TN.  My responsibilities include the functional areas of finance, administration, and IT, and I use the analysis and strategic management tools I learned in the program on a daily basis.  The program equipped me with the knowledge, experience, and necessary confidence to make a significant and constructive change in my career.

- Traci Williams-Taylor

“Two aspects of the program’s integrated curriculum had a great impact on me. For me, the integration impacted me in two aspects. First, because the program was based on my employer, with full backing from that employer, we were able to realize a direct return on our investment in The Professional MBA.

“Secondly, the integration within the program brought together a complex series of issues, from finance to operations management , to marketing and design, and put everything into one package. The Marketplace simulation gave me a completely new perspective of business, a completely different way of looking at things. For example, as I prepare financial justifications for every a new piece of equipment, I consider what actually costs us money, including the floor space, time, operations management and the cost of lost opportunities.”
